It is the only town in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is renowned worldwide for its geology, with some of the oldest rock formations in existence.

The picturesque town forms an excellent base for those who love exploring the countryside and provides fantastic opportunities for a range of activities - hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, or just soaking up the glorious surroundings and wildlife.

The Long Mynd rising above the west of the town is renowned for gliding, hang gliding and paragliding, and boasts the second highest golf course in England.

The town centre has lots of independent, locally-owned businesses which help complete a magical visit.

Carding Mill Valley View

Carding Mill Valley

Walk on up to the tea-room for a tasty treat before you head up to the hills, choose a path to follow and climb to the top. As you pass the sheep on the way, you'll notice all the noise of everyday life drifting away, the traffic on the roads disappears and you get closer to nature. At the top you can see for miles around with breathtaking views across Shropshire, Cheshire and the Black Mountains. Covering as much as 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) of heather-covered hills with stunning views, this is an important place for wildlife, geology and archaeology.

The Long Mynd

The Long Mynd is a large and long plateau which, together with the Stiperstones, make up the largest area of heathland in the Shropshire Hills. This beautiful landscape was created when some of Britain's oldest rocks were pushed to the surface along the Church Stretton fault. It has since been shaped by human activity for thousands of years with scattered archaeological remains from the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Medieval times.

The Stiperstones

The second highest hill in Shropshire, the views are magnificent, and the countryside on the west side of the Long Mynd is a patchwork of hedgerows having so far remained unaffected by modern farming methods - quite different from the east side. Folklore abounds on The Stiperstones. There is The Devil's Chair, the northernmost tor, where His Infernal Majesty is claimed to take up residence at times. A thunderstorm will immediately occur should a human seek to sit in the place. There are several bronze age cairns along its ridge.

Much Wenlock - 13 miles

A beautiful medieval town that inspired the modern Olympic Games, Much Wenlock is quintessentially English, and feels much more like a village than a town. On the streets you will see examples of Medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture. A short stroll from the town centre are the dramatic ruins of Wenlock Priory (English Heritage), laid upon the site of St. Milburga’s Abbey around 680 AD.

Ludlow - 15 miles

Ludlow is a thriving medieval market town and an architectural gem with a lively community feel, busy with events and festivals throughout the year. The historic town centre and the 11th century Ludlow Castle are situated on a cliff above the River Teme and are surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Shropshire and the Welsh Marches.

Shrewsbury - 16 miles

Shrewsbury is Shropshire’s county town and is perfectly placed in the centre of our rural county. Shrewsbury’s town centre is almost an island, encircled by a meandering loop of the River Severn. Within its loop are distinctive churches, Shrewsbury Castle, beautiful timber-framed houses and a sweeping riverside parkland known as the Quarry or Quarry Park.
